Single Wing Beast Offense

Traditionally, I have always been a Spread Wing-T offensive guy incorporating both versions of the two most powerful offenses on the high school level, the Spread and Wing-T offenses. However, over the last couple of years, my offensive philosophy has had to adapt to a couple of scenarios placed before my staff. Secondly, I also faced major injuries at a couple of my main skill positions. This predicament made it more and more difficult to spread the football field. There are many reasons I decided to install the Single-Wing into my offensive philosophy. First of all, the offense is very easy to install and teach into any offensive philosophy. Secondly, the blocking schemes are very similar used by all forms of offense including the Wing-T, Spread, Wishbone, I-Formation, etc. This makes it very easy to add to our already explosive Spread Wing-T Offensive system. Fourth, it gives defenses trouble because it provides a solid run game, misdirection, and a different look that most schools are not familiar with as well. Lastly, I have seen the success first-hand of programs that run a similar system at Giles County H.

In American and Canadian football , a single-wing formation was a precursor to the modern spread or shotgun formation. Created by Glenn “Pop” Warner , the single wing was superior to the T formation in its ability to get an extra eligible receiver down field. Among coaches, single-wing football denotes a formation using a long snap from center as well as a deceptive scheme that evolved from Glenn “Pop” Warner ‘s offensive style. Traditionally, the single-wing was an offensive formation that featured a core of four backs including a tailback, a fullback, a quarterback blocking back , and a wingback.

Linemen were set “unbalanced”, with two on one side of the center and four on the other. This was done by moving the off-side guard or tackle to the strong side.

I’m sure single wing coaches chuckle at wing-t coaches who decide to He likes having offensive linemen that are in a 3-point stance and fire off to hit people. The power sweep (8) play is owned by the coach because the play The first thing he does is look inside – is there a man on the inside tackle?

The Beast is a formation rooted in the Single wing offense. The Beast represents an era in football that was concerned with power above all else. As with all formations, there are countless nuanced variations. You can run Beast as both a balanced and unbalanced double beast alignment. For my purposes, I prefer the unbalanced version.

The Formation is heavily unbalanced with 4 players to the call side of the Center. The backfield will align 1 yd off the line in the C, D, and E gaps for Sweep. For the Wedge, the backfield will align 1 yd off the line in the B, C, and D gaps. The S back will be at a depth of 3.

In American football , a T formation frequently called the full house formation in modern usage, sometimes the Robust T is a formation used by the offensive team in which three running backs line up in a row about five yards behind the quarterback , forming the shape of a “T”. Numerous variations of the T formation have been developed, including the Power-T, where two tight ends are used, the Pro T, which uses one tight end and one wide receiver , or the Wing T , where one of the running backs or wingback lines up one step behind and to the side of the tight end.

Any of these can be run using the original spacing, which produced a front of about seven yards, or the Split-T spacing, where the linemen were farther apart and the total length of the line was from 10 to 16 yards.

There, the single wing is not just a package in some teams’ offenses This year, the Bulldogs were ousted in the round of 16 but still went

The following is a list of common and historically significant formations in American football. In association football, the formation describes how the players in a team are positioned on the pitch. Different formations can be used depending on whether a team wishes to play more attacking or defensive football. This list is not exhaustive; there are hundreds of different ways to organize a team’s players while still remaining within the “7 on the line 4 in the backfield” convention.

Still, this list of formations covers enough of the basics that almost every formation can be considered a variant of the ones listed below. The T formation is the precursor to most modern formations, in that it places the quarterback directly under center in contrast to its main competitor of its day, the single wing , which had the quarterback receiving the ball on the fly.

It consists of three running backs lined up in a row about five yards behind the quarterback, forming the shape of a T. It may feature two tight ends known as the Power T or one tight end and a wide receiver in this case known as a split end. This is a running formation in which the option is effective. The T formation was made famous by the University of Minnesota in the s and s winning five national titles. When legendary coach George Halas’ Chicago Bears used the T-formation to defeat the Washington Redskins by a score of 73—0 in the NFL championship game, it marked the end of the Single Wing at nearly all levels of play, as teams, almost overnight, moved to formations with the quarterback “under center” like the T.

A combination of brilliant offensive scheming and terrible counter-strategy from North Carolina led to a huge day for Baylor and single-wing, spread football.

The NBA world has been rocked by the introduction of “spread” tactics over the last several seasons with the major shift coming when the Miami Heat won consecutive championships thanks to “small-ball” basketball lineups that confronted opponents with LeBron James playing a “power-guard” position while surrounded by three point shooters. The spacing that the Heat were able to get on offense made it virtually impossible to handle the freakish, 6’8″ James on his drives to the basket.

Last year the Golden State Warriors took this style of play to its logical conclusion with a five-out lineup devoid of a traditional big man and loaded with elite shooters and devastating spacing. WIth their “lineup of death” the Warriors took down LeBron James’ Cavaliers and are now threatening the ’96 Bulls record for most wins in a regular season.

However not many teams have been able to take the final step to produce an equivalent to Golden State’s “lineup of death” that puts maximal stress on an opposing defense. The way to do this is with the ” ultimate spread formation ” which combines single-wing run game tactics with spread formations. Always looking for ways to spread out opponents only to run them over and needing an adjustment to his normally pass-heavy attack in the wake of losing all his good QBs, Art Briles adopted this approach against Texas in Baylor’s season finale and then doubled down against North Carolina in the bowl game.

The result? This will unquestionably be dismissed as another clever gimmick from Briles but there are sound principles at play in what Baylor did and it’s not terribly simple to stop.

When most people think of a balanced offense, they think of a relatively even percentage of yards gained rushing to yards gained passing. However, I think of this term in a different way. I think of a balanced offense as one that can give you the plays you need to get a first down or to win a game, regardless of the statistics involved. As a side note here, I will mention that last year the New England Patriots achieved a record number of victories in a row and won the Super Bowl although they ranked 27th in the NFL in yardage gained rushing.

When that team needed a running play, apparently they often chose one on which their players could do an efficient job. Now I will go through a single wing offense, discussing which plays I might use to achieve the desired result. Since most of the readers of this article are familiar with my new book, Winning Single Wing Football , I will designate plays by name and also mention the pages or chapters where I have discussed them in my book. Lets begin with what we might use in short yardage when we want to make a first down or a touchdown.

Steve Logan dug into his history book this week to give us a lesson on the origins of the modern offense — the single-wing. Popularized by Pop Warner in the early s, the single wing took advantage of early motion and unbalanced lines to try and confuse the defense while putting the ball in the hands of the skill players as quickly as possible. The original single-wing used the quarterback as the blocking back.

Eight-Man Coaches from all over continue to adapt and modify this extremely flexible scheme. This is a “Jet” based scheme that has it’s roots in the old Single Wing.

The Wing-T is an offshoot of the Single Wing, which dominated football in the first half of the 20th century. And like the Single Wing, it’s largely based on deception and misdirection. How Baylor took us closer to spread football’s final destination

College football is gradually progressing to the point where rushing the ball is a thing of the past. The nine offenses on this list are the ones that are, for the most part, obsolete, but which we would love to see make a comeback at the collegiate level. This desire to see these offenses return is due to their emphasis on the power run game and sheer domination of an opponent. While some are used occasionally, usually as a gimmick, for the most part, these offenses have faded into the annals of college football history, never to make a big time return, unless Barry Alvarez gets to run the college football universe for an extended period of time.

The program let me diagram the positioning and direction that a single player must go to on a certain play. It’s a fantastic opportunity for my team to learn. And it’s.

It’s also the home of Gueydan High School, whose football team over the years has not been a point of special community pride. Not until this past season, that is, when Coach Ward Courville’s Gueydan Bears broke all sorts of school records. Most significant, perhaps, was winning five games for the first time in school history; but the Bears didn’t stop there, finishing with the first winning season and the first post-season playoff spot in school history.

Coach Courville was kind enough to send me a tape not only of the Bears’ highlights, but also of some of the treatment Gueydan’s great season received from local TV stations. The Bears did a nice job in their first year of running the Double-Wing, and Coach Courville is already excited about next season. Coach Wyatt: Been meaning to write since our season was over.
